Roof storm damage repair for Pittsburgh homes

Storm damage repair in Pittsburgh usually starts with a question: did that storm hurt my roof? Some damage is obvious, like a tree limb through the shingles. Much of it is not. Straight A Exterior Renovations inspects roofs after storms, documents what we find with photos and repairs the damage so small openings do not become leaks.
Our storm work covers wind-damaged and missing shingles, hail bruising, punctures and broken decking from fallen limbs, bent flashing, damaged vents and gutters pulled loose by wind or debris. When the damage is extensive, we may recommend a full roof replacement, and we explain why.
Pittsburgh summers bring strong thunderstorms with straight-line winds and occasional hail, and the city's mature tree canopy means limbs come down when they do. Winter adds heavy wet snow and ice. Homes on hillsides and ridgetops can take the brunt of the wind. Storm damage that goes unrepaired lets water in a little at a time, and by the time a stain appears inside, the deck or insulation may already be wet.
Getting a professional inspection soon after a storm also helps if you decide to file an insurance claim. Clear photos and notes taken close to the date of the storm show what happened and when. We handle the documentation and, if you want help with the claim, we work with your insurance company from start to finish.

What's included
Types of storm damage we repair
Different storms leave different marks. Here is what we look for and how we fix it.

Wind damage
Strong winds lift shingle edges, break the seal strip and tear shingles off entirely, often along ridges, rakes and eaves. We replace missing and creased shingles and check that the surrounding shingles are still sealed down.
Hail damage
Hail can bruise shingles, knock off granules and crack the mat underneath, even when the damage is hard to see from the ground. We inspect shingles, vents and metal flashing for the pattern of impacts hail leaves behind.
Fallen tree limbs
A falling limb can puncture shingles, crack rafters and break decking. We remove the debris, make the roof safe, and repair the structure and decking before installing new shingles.
Flashing and vent damage
Wind and debris bend flashing, crack vent covers and loosen pipe boots. These parts are easy to overlook, so we check and repair each one as part of the inspection.
Storm-related leaks
Wind-driven rain can push water under shingles and flashing that are otherwise intact. We trace the entry point and repair it, then check the attic for wet insulation or decking.
Gutter damage
Storms and falling limbs can bend or pull gutters away from the fascia. We repair or replace damaged gutters so water is carried away from the roof edge and foundation.
Snow and ice damage
Heavy wet snow and ice dams can damage shingles and gutters along the eaves. We repair the damage and look at ventilation and ice and water protection to reduce the chance it happens again.

FAQ
Storm Damage Repair questions from Pittsburgh homeowners
How can I tell if my roof has storm damage?
Look for missing or creased shingles, shingle pieces or granules in the yard and gutters, dented vents or gutters, and new stains on ceilings. Much storm damage cannot be seen from the ground, so a free inspection is the safest way to know. Please do not climb onto the roof yourself.
Does hail damage always show from the ground?
No. Hail often bruises shingles or knocks off granules in ways that are only visible up close. Dents in soft metal like vents and gutters can be a clue that the shingles were hit too.
What should I do right after a tree limb hits my roof?
Stay out of any room where the ceiling looks damaged, and keep people away from the area. If water is coming in, call us for emergency tarping. Take photos if it is safe, and contact your insurance company to report the damage.
How soon after a storm should I get an inspection?
As soon as practical. An early inspection catches openings before they let in more water, and photos taken close to the storm date are useful if you file a claim. Many policies also have time limits for reporting damage, so check yours.
Do I have to file an insurance claim for storm damage?
No. Filing is your decision. We can inspect the roof and give you a repair quote either way. If the damage looks significant, we will explain how the claim process works so you can decide.
Can wind damage a roof that looks fine afterward?
Yes. Wind can break the seal that holds shingles down without tearing them off. Those shingles may look normal but lift easily in the next storm. We check shingle seals during a storm inspection.
Will you repair storm damage on my gutters too?
Yes. We repair and replace storm-damaged gutters as part of the job, and we can add gutter guards if you are tired of clearing leaves after every storm.
